Doctor Harshman has set aside this page for our reluctant author, and gardener, and cuisine master, Tanya, mother of four. Food that comes from our gardens satisfies something in our souls - so we could say that Tanya serves up Maine Soul Food. Being a die-hard Mainer Tanya has so far refused to put her fingers to the page herself so we are putting her wisdom here for you despite her protests.

Tanya could take two twigs and three pebbles and could cook a nutritious gourmet meal for twelve.

Who's Hungry?!
In the winter, under cover of snow, she rushes out in her boots, to the spot under the snow where she knows her garden is, plucks a handful of brussels sprouts from the ground, and rustles back inside. The vegetables fall miraculously into the pot and with seemingly no effort, and lots of mouth-watering aromas, out steams a delicious meal.

Big Medicine's Response to Children Sick with a Flu:

A periodical we got from the Children's Hospital in Boston showed a doctor wearing a white coat, seated in his chair, happy, comfortable and flu-free said that he really could not recommend any over-the-counter medicine to parents, and added that: "The good news is that a cold will only last three to four days, after which the child WILL BEGIN feeling better."
As a mother I was disgusted. See: "Tanya's Tips for Sick Children" -->

Tanya's Tips for When Your Children are Sick:

Get the Point?
While Doctor Harshman is not from Maine he comes from Maine stock. "Sc
hieffelin Point" near Gouldsboro is named for his mother's side of the family.

If my children complain of a sore throat when going to bed, I have them swallow a 15mg zinc tablet (as zinc gluconate) - my bottle also has 120mg of calcium (as dicalcium phosphate).

*They swallow (with no water) the zinc tablet as they lie on their back when they lay back to sleep. The point is for it to dissolve in the throat. I also may try to give them one as they wake up.

During the day if they still are suffering, I take a mortar and pestle and I break up a tablet from Shaklee that has echinacea, zinc, and elderberry. I mix the crushed tablet with a small spoon of honey and about a tablespoon of vinegar (the honey and vinegar is very nice by itself - honey is known to also be antibacterial). This goes in the child's mouth - zappo and you're done. I may treat them like this three times the first day. When they go to bed or take a nap on that same day, I also will have them swallow another zinc.

I may also give them 500mg of a sustained release vitamin C tablet 3 x a day. It slowly releases vitamin C throughout the day.

I keep them off all dairy at this time. Also, no white bread or snack foods - no refined sugar products (sometimes I will put my echinacea tablet crushed in orange juice (two tablespoons).
LOTS OF WATER!

For Adults:
Lots of water and double the dose of vitamin C does it for me. My symptoms subside very quickly. I don't know when I last had a cold and I have not, and neither have my children, been sick with vomiting. Sometimes I also may give them an herbal lax tablet when they go to bed. I try to get them cleaned out from the inside out (I don't want to leave something back to feed whatever is ailing them). I also have made chicken soups with lots of onion and garlic.

I also have made a yogurt soup that has onion tops, garlic, cilantro, parsley, spinach, and a pinch of cayenne pepper.

I used to give them a lot of chopped garlic when they were younger.

I hope that this helps ward off the colds for you this winter.
